| Who was Joseph Pilates? Joseph Pilates was born in 1880 in Germany. Throughout his childhood he suffered from rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever. He dedicated his life to becoming as fit, strong and healthy as was possible. Over the years he developed a system of exercises, which he called 'Contrology', that are so effective they are taught and practised worldwide by people who wish to regain and maintain their everyday fitness to elite sports specialists and dancers. 'Physical fitness can neither be acquired
by wishful thinking nor by outright purchase. However it can be gained through
performing the daily exercises conceived for this purpose by the founder of
Contrology (Pilates).' Pilates, J, (1945) Return to Life Through Contrology Joseph Pilates at 57 and 82 years old. | What is Pilates? 'Contrology (Pilates) is complete co-ordination of body, mind and spirit.' Pilates, J, (1945) Return to Life Through Contrology Pilates is a non-impact exercise that is most effective when done regularly. It combines building strength in your core postural muscles, with mobilising of your spine and other joints, suppleness, balance and control.
| What happens in a Pilates Class? The classes involve a gentle warm-up focussing on your breathing, posture and engaging your core muscles; a variety of specific exercises that strengthen your deep postural muscles as well as toning those common problem areas; finishing with a few minutes of relaxation, resting the body and emptying the mind so you should leave the class feeling refreshed and energised. Throughout the class you work at your own pace. Classes are multi-levelled so you can choose a level that suits you and your energy levels at that time. It is not a race or a competition! Some weeks you may feel able to try a higher level and others not. This doesn't matter and in fact it is more important to get the basic techniques accurate before progressing so you don't compromise or harm your body. 'Quality not quantity!' Don't worry if you have injuries, old or new, back/neck problems or are pregnant. All exercises can be adapted, just let me know. |
